Target Tuesday has been progressing along in my blog for the last nine weeks and as we’ve just moved into a new month – I thought a quick recap was in order
If you’re new to Target Tuesday read here. We have five months left of 2009, so what do you want the rest of the year to be about?
Imagine yourself on a crisp December morning (or warm if you’re somewhere hot!). Picture yourself seeing the results and reaping rewards from moving things forward. Target Tuesday is a mechanism for you to keep focused each week and progress a little further with one or more goals.
What one thing would make the biggest difference to you? What do you want things to look like or feel like on that December morning? Be as specific as you can be and write down what comes out for you.
What’s bugging you right now that you’d like to change? What would make a huge or powerful difference to you?
Writing down your goals is key. Keep them with you and pay positive attention to your goals as often as you can. Feel good about them and imagine yourself there with your goal(s) in place – pretty darn good, right?!
Talk to people who are positive and can motivate you to keep progressing with your goals. You may wish to start a brainstorm group either face-to-face or virtual. This will help you keep on track. You can utilise Target Tuesday to share your ideas and we can help each other. Each week, Target Tuesday is for thinking about what decision you can make or what action you can take that will be one step forwards, no matter how big or small towards your goal.
Here are some examples of goals:
- I’d like to take a holiday abroad next year (short term goal)
- I’d like to buy a new house within ten years (medium term goal)
- I’d like to help the homeless (ongoing goal)
- I’d like to get married in three years’ time (short term goal)
- I’d like to have a comfortable retirement (long term goal)
These examples relate to different time periods. Short term is normally taken to be under five years, ‘medium term’ is around five to ten years and ‘long term’ is normally more than ten years.
Once you have a list of goals, you can prioritise. This activity from a previous Mid Week Inspiration on Thinking about the future, will help you to list your goals in order of priority for you, given your circumstances and resources.
Once you have determined your goals, you need to produce a plan to reach your goal.It doesn’t have to be complete, but you need to be moving in the right direction.
Taking the previous examples, they all had financial implications:
- I’d like to take a holiday abroad next year (short term goal) – Adjust your pattern of spending to save for your holiday.
- I’d like to buy a new house within ten years (medium term goal) – save for a deposit
- I’d like to help the homeless (ongoing goal) – your plan might be to adjust your pattern of spending to be able to give more.
- I’d like to get married in three years’ time (short term goal) – build up short term savings
- I’d like to have a comfortable retirement (long term goal) – build up long term savings
Once you have assessed your goals, decided on your plan, You must then ACT and Beat Procrastination. Finally REVIEW the outcomes. Utilise Target Tuesday to ACT and REVIEW!
